I treated myself to a couple of dovetail chisels from Ashley Iles as a belated present to myself (well…you gotta from time to time). They have a nice elliptical shape, but I’m not sure whether to sharpen them in the usual bevel-edge manner. Is there a certain method so as to not destroy the shape they have?
I understand the resistance to start scraping metal off a nice new set of chisels. However, I have been very happy and satisfied with Paul’s micro-camber method. Once you get used to it, it is very quick and reliable.
I sharpened my bevel-edge chisels with Paul’s method and was really pleased with the result. Thinking about it though, the shape has already been established on these chisels, so it should remain as long as I keep the right angle. I think their unusual shape made me question this process.
As you said Steve, I think I was a bit tentative about sharpening them at all!
Thanks all.
