Hi,
I’ll be around San Francisco in november for work and I know that prices tend to be cheaper in the US than in France for most woodworking related stuff, so I thought I’ll have a look in order to get a few tools (a dovetail saw if possible and maybe a spokeshave).
The thing is, I don’t know much about the town and if there’s some people around San Francisco that can councel me on good shops where I can have a look, that would be great.
Cheers,

I don’t live in San Francisco, but the handy Woodcraft store locator says there’s a franchise in San Carlos south of downtown towards Palo Alto. They have a fairly decent selection of hand tools usually, from saws to chisels to carving tools to their own branded line of handplanes.

25 September 2015 at 8:20 pm #130830Hi Vincente. I live in Mountain View, about 40 miles south of SF. The Woodcraft store that Derek mentioned is the only place I know of up near SF, but there are probably others. Be careful what you get at Woodcraft – they sell a lot of junk as well as good tools.
Update – I just googled it and remembered that there is a place called “Japan Woodworker” on the other side of the bay from SF in Alameda (near Oakland). I have not been there in ten years or so, so I’m not absolutely certain they are still there. Their address is 1731 Clement Ave, Alameda, CA 94501 and the phone number is (510) 521-1810.
This is a little bit farther and about 30 miles east of SF, but there is also a Rockler Woodworking and Hardware store in Concord, California. Their address and phone are: 4420 Treat Blvd., Concord, CA 94521
(925) 521-1800.Hope this helps.
28 September 2015 at 7:36 am #130890Thank you both for your answers, I’ll check how long it takes to get there (I’m there for work so I don’t have that much time for useful shopping 😀 ) and see if I’ll be able to get some tools 🙂
21 October 2015 at 11:29 pm #131582Vincent – I’m in San Francisco and Woodcraft is the only store I’ve been able to rely on. Its a 30-45 minute drive from SF depending on the traffic.
You can check out their website to see what they carry before you visit. They don’t stock every item (in-store) that they sell on their website. So if there are specific items that you want to buy you can order it on-line and have it delivered to the store for you to pick up.
Enjoy San Francisco!
Cheers.
16 November 2015 at 9:51 am #132478Thanks Chad for adding your answer. Sadly I did not get time to go to the Woodcraft store (I was in SF for work, so not that much time for wandering about :/ ).
The good thing is next time I’ll be in Jan José, I might be closer.Oh and I gave a try to the shop tool in front of the Mariott Marquis (the conference I was attending was held there) called Cole Hardware. I was lured there as there was hand tools painted on the wall but I couldn’t find anything interesting there :/ (not even a blade to make the bow saw :/ )
I hope I’ll have better luck next time. Once again, thank you all for the answers 🙂
