I have a beautiful slab of walnut 2.5″ x 36″ x 28″. Would like to make a coffee table 18″ high. How do I build base so the slab slab can move and not crack. Like the style bases used by George Nakashima. Cannot tell from photos how he attached top to base.
I can’t answer your question directly but here are some thoughts.
1) Assuming the slab is dried and not freshly cut, you will need to get the slab flat and free of twist so it sits flat on any base you design.
2) You can allow movement by just attaching the center section of the slab to the base. This will allow the edges of the slab to move.
3) I don’t believe you will be able to control any cracking of the slab with the base. The slab is going to do what the slab wants to do. If it is dried well, you may not get any further end cracking. But if you do get some cracking in the future, you can add one of the stylish butterfly’s to stop it from growing.
