I picked up this Stanley 40 scrub plane a few days ago. I have already been able to use it and I really love this little plane. It’s so fun to use and amazing to me how much time you can shave off of a heavy planing job.
I re-finished the tote and knob today as they were kind of dull and blackish. Here’s a before (on the right) and after.

Jay, Ken, Greg,
This is a really important plane to have in your kit. I came across one a few years ago and had no idea what it was used for or how to even use it. Did some research to learn how and now use it all the time.
It will pare down a surface super fast and is very easy to use. They are usually moderately priced and quite a thin plane in the width but that is what allows it to plow across grain so easily.
Buy it if you see it, you will not be disappointed.

10 December 2013 at 4:13 am #23454I put my newly radiused iron in my #5 jack plane and it did a pretty good job of hogging of wood.
Paul does use a rounded off #4 in his video about stock preparation. I think he is suggesting that as a low cost substitute for a scrub plane. I’m not sure that it would be quite the same. I think you have to use a scrub to appreciate it. I really couldn’t believe how fast they work… and they don’t just hunk off a big tear of wood… it is actually pretty controlled cuts. I had to take off almost 1/2 an inch of the face of my bench for some modifications I was doing on my vise, and it just plows it off in not time. It leaves grooves with thin walls that even right out in one or two strokes if you follow it with your #4. Very fun to get the fast results with this plane. Pick one up if you have the chance. 🙂
