Guys, I just picked up a Stanley 5 that I am fixing up. It’s in pretty good general shape, but the level cap screw is mangled and I’m gonna have to get a new one. There’s a couple people on ebay that are asking about 9 bucks for a single screw and my question is, do any of you know of a source that might save me a few dollars? If so, I appreciate it. 🙂

I probably got spare screw But I’m in UK.
So I am not much help. SorryJay,
Have a look thru Patrick Leaches “Blood and Gore” site to find the type plane you have and then look thru the offerings here:
http://www.antique-used-tools.com/comparts.htm
The lever caps come in basically three types depending on the year made.
If in doubt an e-mail with photo should get you something appropriate.
Best,
Craig
Edit: Sorry, didn’t see the “screw” part before I answered.
Source should still get you something reasonable.30 December 2013 at 11:07 pm #24850I think that screw is a #10-24tpi. Take it to the best hardware store in your area, I bet they can fix you up.

Jay/Greg,
I measured several of my planes’ lever cap screws and they’re all 9/32″ x 24 thread.
The 10-24 is going to be too thin a diameter.
There isn’t a direct replacement that I can find in the various tooling sources. ie, Grainger, MSC Supply etc.
I think you’ll either have to find one from a used tool dealer, on EBay or have a local machine shop work one up for you on the lathe since there doesn’t appear to be a die of that size available.
That 9 bucks is starting to look better??

Jay,
OK, I think this might work…
Highland Tools used to carry the repair kits for these planes—now discontinued but with part reference # for the Lever Cap and screw kit- # 1-12-707 thru the following:
http://servicenet.dewalt.com/Parts/Search?searchedNumber=12-707&searchType=0
The parts diagrams and descriptions are still on the Highland website.
Looks like about $16.00 for the lever cap and screw.
Best,
Craig -
