Stanley 50 advice?

I also got me a Stanley no 50 and experienced those problems. I end up tightening the wing nut carefully with some pliers to get really tight. Also make sure the cutter is really sharp.
Another thing I changed is to ditch the adjustment lever, it just doesn’t work well for me. Now I make adjustments by tapping the iron gently with a small hammer. You want the depth of cut to take off not to thick a shaving.
Finally take a look at Paul’s blog concerning combination planes in his tools list posts where he explains his fettling with the cutters. Tried that as well and my results improved quite a bit.

Well I have just got a 50 and noticed the adjustment lever was missing, I wondered if it would work without it and then came across this post 🙂 Now I am not so bothered and will move on.
