I recently splashed out on an ebay Stanley #71 router plane (£70). It is dated 22 Feb 2000, boxed with all parts and looks to have never been used. It arrived about an hour ago.
My question is regarding sharpening the cutters. The cutters are ‘factory sharp’ (ie blunt), so first job is to sharpen them. Presumably, unlike chisels, it does not matter which side of the blade receives most of the sharpening work. There is no need for the side opposite the bevel to be flat, and since that side has better access than the bevel side for sharpening, it would make sense to do the bulk of sharpening on that side.
I’m just looking for confirmation of my reasoning before I pile in.

I did a quick sharpening job on one of the cutters just to get it working.
It’s good, and levelled out a tenon I was having trouble with but I tore the wood on several occasions whilst chiselling across the grain.
Actually, thinking about it, the blade in the #71 can be turned 90 degrees and could then be used in line with the grain. A bit of a pain to keep swapping the cutter though.
