I just acquired a really nice Stanley #71, paid AU$133.40 on the eBay, which seems like a lot, but it’s in fantastic condition and I reasoned that buying a brand new Veritas router plane would cost something on the order of $250. So a bargain, all things considered.
It seems to be a post 1939 model, with the fence, depth stop etc, and hardwood knobs painted black. It came with original box, and a really cool little instruction book, which smells like the books at my nanna’s house when I was a kid. I hope to scan that later and upload it incase people are interested.
What I’d like to know is if anyone has any good advice on how to sharpen these things, particularly how to make sure the cutting edge is parallel with the sole. I have tried looking it up on youtube, with fairly limited success, only a Christopher Schwarz video that isn’t much help, and one other. So yeah, any help or advice would be well received.

Moon, you can try this video by Mitch Peacock. I know it talks about sharpening the router blade, but I’m not sure if it talks about getting it parallel to the router base.
I think that’s one I watched. Didn’t seem all that helpful. I did find out that the veritas router blades can be used with a stanley #71, so I will just give it a bash. If I can’t get them to work to my satisfaction, I’ll just go buy some new ones, they’re not terribly expensive.
