I have an opportunity to buy a Stanley 1960’s handyman toolkit for about 102 pounds or 175 dollars. The toolkit seems to be in mint condition. What personally fascinates me is the no. 3 plane, and the handyman saw.
My question is, do you think the price is worth it? What would you pay for it??Attachments:

I wouldn’t bother on it if you wanted tools to use. The plane looks like a 60’s handyman model. I have a US version of one and it won’t get the degree of finesse the older models will get. The frog on this type of plane is pretty light duty. I have relegated mine to the jobsite toolbox and it can live out the rest of its days planing doorframes. Not what I’m going to use for fine furniture.
Older planes would have a more oval handle, so that is one easy way to spot them. There are a couple of nice ones on the uk auction site.
I like the brace and the square. The saw is probably OK even if it is ugly. The rest of the tools are comparable with what you’d get at a modern day discount tool store.
Now, if you are into collecting, I’d tell you to jump on it if you think the price is right. It looks like a lovely example of what was available back in olden times i.e. The 60’s. It is interesting as a set. I would not use them so as they could be maintained. A light oiling is what I’d give them to keep them from rusting. The set is of interest as a set, not as users. If you take one out you’d likely lose collector value.
Well, that’s my two cents, or tuppence or what have you.
Thanks alot everybody for the great input. I took into account what everyone said, especially jude, and I decided to pass on the offer. I decided to pass because even though it’s very hard to come by good tools here where I live, I already have two number 4’s, a 5, and a 6 stanley that I use. I don’t see myself using this no. 3 very often, esepcially if it’s of “inferior” quality. I’m also not a collector, that is, I enjoy nice, quality tools, but if I won’t use them, there’s no point in buying them.
I’d rather spend the money on a no. 7 or 8 jointer which would be much more useful, or a nice Disston saw.If there’s anyone from southeast Europe that is interested in this set, here’s the link:
