Very shortly I am going to be starting the tool chest build, and I have decided to build it from walnut. Walnut here is $14/bdFt. I was thinking I could save money by making parts that won’t be seen out of a cheaper wood like pine. Specifically the sides and back of the drawers. The front would still be walnut and of course you would only see the pine when the drawer is opened. I am OK with that
Are there any “gotchas” I need to know when having softer wood dovetailed to harder wood? I would think it wouldn’t matter at all, but I am just not sure if wood movement or the pitch of the tail should be changed

Right after I posted this I remember I can probably get enough maple/oak for the drawers from my bent and crooked pile. I will probably go with maple just because I can get access to 1×4 material very easily (and it is free!) I’ll post pictures as I go. I wasn’t able to get a 12″ wide board for the sides so I going to join two and go from there. I am going to take my time on this. I don’t care if it takes a year. I want it to be a show piece 🙂

Can’t wait to see photos of your build! Walnut is my favourite wood by looks but I’ve never worked it
23 October 2015 at 10:53 pm #131645oh wow! I feel lucky then 🙂
I live in the western part of the USA. From what I understand, it is about half the cost on the other side of the country.
Will be good to see how it turns out in Walnut. I picked up a big pile a few months ago and got it ver cheap. Couldn’t help but notice what looks to be PA plates on the wall of your shop?
I may make one of these in Walnut myself. The project list is getting rather long though with the holidays coming up.
