A note of caution on some big box store steel wool.
I had to sweat a joint today, it would not take, I am no pro but I have never had a problem before. After a bit of Jerking it around I replaced the steel wool with emery it worked. I looked over the pack of steel wool it was brand new I bought it for this job. It apears.to have been sprayed with a light waxy oil. Talking with a clerk at the plumbing supply shop he said he has had others tell him the same. It apears the mfg. Is spraying it to extend shelf life. Don’t know for cretin but the stuff has something on it… it was enough of a problem I would hate to spoil a finish on a project.

Frank,
FYI:

Unless otherwise specified, hardware store steel wool is coated with a process oil.
Here’s the “otherwise specified”:
I’ve not had a problem with the oiled stuff and finishes, but for pipe sweating it might be a problem as you found.
Best,
Craig
