Hello All – I picked up a No. 4 Type 19 on ebay that after some tweaking seems to operate smoothly. The plane has strange indentations on the top of the casting that look like the top of screw head… one on either side of the knob, one on either side of the tote and one underneath the advancing screw. Pictures attached to illustrate. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Thanks.
Wow,
That looks like it is showing you how the casting pattern was put together! Strange to see it replicated in such detail though as that would have had to be imprinted into the casting sand. It won’t affect how the plane works. I’ll have to have a closer look at my planes now.
Cheers

Someone would have to put a lot of effort into faking a cast iron plane body with Japanning and aging of the iron. I’d guess its just a bad cleanup job on the casting when it was made.
