Hey Dave, it don’t come much better than that buddy ๐
14 December 2012 at 2:35 pm #4807I’d be inclined to agree with Ken on the handbag thing. Better have a chainsaw or something sticking out of it if your seen in public.

Anonymous14 December 2012 at 4:06 pm #4817Gift wrapping is very sound advice as long as your wife understands why she’s been given a strip of leather with the bar from a chainsaw attached for Christmas. ๐ ๐

I think the side chosen depends a great deal on whether of not it’s received some form of artificial finish (Polish or glaze) after tanning process or if it’s fresh hide with smooth and scraped (Rough) faces. ย The butt leather I have was freshly tanned and intended for saddle work, but fine grained and ready for use in the same manner as an open razor strop. ย Suede is just as usable with either face for stropping. ๐

Hi Jon,
I’m sorry you’re having problem using chamois. ย When fixing chamois into place I simply lay it on a pre-glued board, ease.stretch out any creases and clamp it overnight beneath a caul. ย Once the glue has dried the leather can be trimmed the following day. ย There’s no real need to stretch it into place, but it can’t hurt either way and you should find chamois lasts an absolute age of heavy use before it needs replacing. ๐

I’ll post a few pictures asap so you can see the different leather types I use and have used for strops and will give a quick run down of the process.
Anonymous14 December 2012 at 4:56 pm #4819Gary, do you really have to buddy. You know how we hate reading about all this stuff ๐
Anonymous14 December 2012 at 5:11 pm #4821I might go on strike, but seeing it’s your birthday I’ll sort something out lol ๐
Anonymous14 December 2012 at 5:14 pm #4822HaHa it was my birthday on Wednesday ย buddy, but thank you anyway. ๐
15 December 2012 at 4:20 am #4853You guys are a real comedians!….I’ve been using green buffing compound rubbed on a solid piece of hardwood, no leather. It’s been working great.ย I have to admit it’s only because I haven’t yet looked for a suitable handbag….I mean manly leather. ๐
Anonymous15 December 2012 at 9:19 am #4857Manly leather is good, while handbags are best kept for Saturday nights ๐ ๐

I’ll run through the strop making process a little later and will include pictures to illustrate a few of my methods. ๐
15 December 2012 at 3:28 pm #4864I’ve been using an old leather belt that is wide enough to have gone out of style after the 70’s…that’ll give away my age, and using it rough side up just because I didn’t know which side was correct. I use jeweler’s rouge & I use it primarily to finish up my chisels & plane blades. Seems to work fine that way.
Anonymous17 December 2012 at 5:23 pm #5015A quick picture showing my existing strop (Chamois and softwood base board) with honing paste stick, plus fresh suede leather and butt leather for strops. ๐
So if I have this right, you guys are saying that if your wife is on her time you need to buy a purse for stropping. One question though, if you get a hand bag for your strop does that mean you have to wear pumps when sharpening plane blades? I can be a little slow at times. If you could fill me in I would appreciate it.
18 December 2012 at 3:21 am #5077Kevin,
Its not a purse, its a satchel. Indiana Jones had a satchel !!!
Pumps are optional ๐
