All,
I have two 9″ maple boxes that I’ve created that will be hung on a wall. They are basically large jewelry boxes that will have a slot cut in the top so people can put info cards in them – like old ballot boxes.
I could just bore holes in the side and then run screws into the wall – but for the lid to open, I need them offset from the wall a bit. I thought a twist on the French Cleat might be interesting here. I haven’t seen this done before. I was looking for a cleat that would keep the box from sliding back and forth and keep it level. Here’s what I came up with – it is a tapered diamond pattern. As far as “movement” goes, yes, there is a little with this – the thickness of the kerf of my saw. But it is very sturdy – so far. If I had wanted absolute rigidity, I would have just ran screws into the wall. I’d like to know what pros/cons you see with this idea.
Obviously, the pictured item is a prototype. I would make the permanent ones out of maple to match the boxes.
That’s a good idea Doug and if you want to eliminate the movement, simply take 1/8″ off the point at the bottom of the cleat and it will slip right down and seat firmly. You can plane the top of the pieces flush as well if that matters at all.
@harryawheeler – ooh! I hadn’t considered that. I will definitely try that this afternoon.
