I was thinking of making my wife a hope chest she has been asking for. Has anyone made one? I was thinking of using the design Paul shows in his blog posts from Nov 2011, however not adding a drawer. This will be my largest project I have attempted/.
I think I have most of my numbers figured out, however I’m stuck on how to mount the bottom of the case. I was thinking of adding rails to the inside of the carcass, then laying the tongue and groove boards on top of the rails, but the corners have me stumped. Just notch the corner boards to fit? In my mind it just doesn’t look right.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks
on an old chest it’s almost certainly a wooden panel or multiple panels in a groove that can expand and contract for the bottom, similar to a door, you need to calculate the size for proper movement, different woods move a lot more than others, allow for some expansion just incase, but the wood is more likely to shrink than expand as it dries out.
Yeah, I made a cedar blanket chest for my wife, and the bottom panel consists of T&G pieces fitted together, riding in a groove cut into the carcass.
I’ll move some blankets out of the way and snap a picture of the bottom, but it’s pretty obvious:
