Tongue & groove vs lap joint is one better than the other? I am going to make a large wooden box and want to use multiple boards on the bottom to compensate for wood movement. I am going to have to purchase a specialty to make the joint.
I prefer splines myself, since you don’t lose any width per board. You will need a plough plane to cut a groove in both boards, say 1/4″” deep, and then cut a spline that is slightly narrower than 1/2 “” to allow for wood movement.
If I’m not mistaken Paul uses this method in the corner shelf project.
Thanks, I had not considered splines. I became fixated on t&g and laps.
From my experience, t&g is a bit harder to get right. (I was using a Stanley no 50).
I would think that the amount of work would be the same if you use either one of the 3 options you now have.
personally I’d go for shiplapped, as I find it easier to make a rebate and tune it so the boards line up nicely.

Thks. for your suggestion. I can make a shiplap joint without buying additional tools.
