Came across this post linked on The Unplugged Shop site, for those of us with children/grandchildren thought it worth sharing. For myself, in the past, i wanted to be alone when in the shop but have come to realize my folly. There is no reason to exclude children now that i’m using hand tools. Thankfully my children (14, 12 and 6 years old) are still young enough that i don’t think i’ve totally blown it!

How to Start Training the Next Generation of Woodworkers
My 14 year old daughter will sometimes come down to the workshop to see what Dad’s up to but my 11 year old son has been less interested until very recently. This is despite his enjoying being able to boast at school about the replica film props I’ve made (Star Wars Ironman etc.). It’s only now he’s doing Design/Technology at secndary school that he’s got interested.
This weekend we will be building a model Viking Longship for his history homework. Mind you, he does love handplaneing but at the moment he has a talent for turning squared up stock into door wedges (but dammed fine wedges I’ll have you know) 🙂
Thanks Barry. That goes in the Resource bookmark file.
My girlfriend’s grand kids, 3 and 5, love to do just about anything with grown ups and they’re already talking excitedly about building bird houses and feeders on the new work bench!
