As Clint Eastwood puts it, “There’s nothing like a good piece of Hickory” 🙂
I think this is the hardest wood I’ve used to date, you need sharp tools with this wood. It planes and cuts nicely tho. Got the frame sized and morticed today. Tomorrow I will start shaping it up. Am using the Gramercy kit from Lee Valley that comes with the brass, handles and three blades.

12 January 2014 at 2:25 am #25781Looks like the same kit I bought from Tools For Working Wood, Dave. So far, I have printed out the plans and picked through some offcuts of White Oak that I had. I am hoping to get working on mine next week. I have worked with Hickory one time, that was enough for me, lol.
12 January 2014 at 8:44 pm #25823Very nice Dave, well done. How did you like the Gramercy kit? I really like the shape of the handles. Enjoy using it, I know it was very hard work to tame that hickory.
Greg, although Gramercy sells the complete saws, I appreciate the fact they make the hardware available to purchase so a person can build their own frame. The kit is pretty good, just epoxy the handles onto the brass pins and build the frame. All in all a person could build this in a few hours and you end up with a nice turning saw. Now I have to build stuff and make use of my new saw 🙂
Hickory, although this wood is like stone, I was amazed at how well it responded to my Spokeshave, chisels and card scrapers. The card scrapers resulted in glass smooth surfaces so no need for sandpaper.
I’ve got enough wood left over I might make some file handles 🙂

13 January 2014 at 1:55 am #25866Nice jobe Dave, now I am even more anxious to get started on mine!
Thanks gents, I put the medium blade on and it cuts really smooth in pine, can’t wait to use it on a project, I would imagine it cuts very fine in hardwood like cherry. There is definitely a learning curve with it, gotta keep the saw moving to take a turn.
