No idea what this is but it’s amazingly heavy and extremely dense.
The piece I an holding was test piece that has been outside for about a decade. No signs of deterioration and it had no protective finish. That tiny piece weighed 1.8kg when it was dry.
Those white parts can leave nasty splinters too if you’re not careful… hand planes beautifully but machines terribly.

3 June 2015 at 11:07 am #127474From a farm in England. All he could tell me is “bloody good for fences boy”.
Apart from that I don’t know anything about it. It really smells like chocolate when you it as well, it’s awesome. If you cut through the grain in. A certain way you get a beautiful quilted effected.
3 June 2015 at 11:12 am #127475Got about 80 2.4 meters lengths of this timber and it all has the white flecks all the way through…. there are also extremely large spans of end grain running down the middle of boards, like you can see in one of my photos. Ipe looks like a good match bit there are a fee things that don’t match like the scent and the flecks
I bet you it is Ipe. Ipe is excellent rot resistant and gives off notes of vanilla and cinnamon from working it. Very nice stuff!! Hopefully you have enough to build something from it and if not, at least you could plane it to get your shop filled with the wonderful aroma of chocolate!!
3 June 2015 at 2:43 pm #127477Starting to come around that it is ipe. Good call guys.
What should I make with 192 linear meters of 2×7 inch ipe? Bought it for 450 British pounds.
Bargain.
