In attempting to assemble a full set of auger bits, I’ve ended up with a fair few lemons: odd ones from sets, or ones that I was a little optimistic about at the time, that turned out to have knackered spurs beyond at least my ability to restore them to use.
I’m reluctant to get rid of them, and wondered if anyone had any suggestions for repurposing them as other tools? I thought maybe cutting off the spirals and filing them into flat screwdriving bits for the brace, or filing them into nail punches, or perhaps keeping a few spirals and trying to shape them into a countersink if I’m feeling ambitious!
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Matt
Huh, I thought this topic was well and buried.
I did try making a countersink but couldn’t get the cutting geometry right. I’m not sure if that was just my poor attempt and understanding or if the nature of the spirals work against you.
I’ve not tried repurposing any others as I’ve not had the need yet; metalworking is not something I enjoy really so it happens in fits and starts.

I have replaced a couple of tips just to see if I could. It’s probably not cost effective but I drilled a small hole in the center of my bit and made a new screw. Silver soldered it in place. It works great, but very time consuming. Probably cheaper to buy a new bit… 🙂
