Welcome! / Forums / General Woodworking Discussions / Tools and Tool Maintenance/Restoration / Veritas scraper.
I’ve used hand scrapers for years and am comfortable getting a hooked burr on the edge and enjoying the results. But can I get the Veritas to behave likewise? No. I watched Peter using his, and it was like listening to music. What’s the secret?
Thanks for your help. Terry
hi Terry,
what sort of issues are you having?
Paul has made a couple of videos on sharpening and setting up a #80 scraper. i have followed his guidance when sharpening my veritas #80 as well as my stanley #85 and i get very nice results
the videos are in the tools and techniques section of the video library

Peter? Shows how tired I am! Yes, I do mean Paul. I’m getting crumbs instead of wafers. I’ll go back to YouTube and check on Paul’s video, Barry. Thank God for YouTube 🤣. So grateful for the advice.

I’d recommend using some scrap wood to practice using it as well and keep adjusting things to see how it behaves. I was getting similar results and was just fiddling with it and kind of stumbled my way into it but that tweaking and trying things gave me a better understanding of the tool.
I’d also add to check the sole, with a veritas it’s probably not an issue but with my both Kunz spokeshave and cabinet scraper I was able to make them work a little bit better honing them on my diamond stones.

Thanks Matt. I did just as you say and eventually I got there 🤣
