Hi everyone
As you may know, recently I found an eBay bargain, an old Disston D-8 that was made around the 1945-1960 period I believe. It was only £5. The handle was in very bad shape as it looked like from these pictures that the seller had provided:

As you can see from those pictures, it looked in pretty bad shape and I thought I would have to replace the handle. However when it arrived I discovered the handle wasn’t all that bad. There was a small split on the bottom which had a screw through it but apart from that it was pretty good. Here are some pictures of the process:

I used a drill makeshift lathe and sandpaper to clean the screws and the medallion:

Test fitting the cleaned blade and the sanded handle:

The teeth have not been sharpened yet though their current sharpness surprised me. For an old saw that came in this condition it is very sharp.
Overall though the saw came out much better than I had expected. I also expected the screws and the medallion to be made of brass but this steel doesn’t look too bad either.
6 July 2015 at 2:33 am #128239Looks really great, Raze. Congratulations on that. Did you say there was a screw keeping the lower part of the handle together? I didn’t see that in any pictures.
Anyway, great restoration. I’m sure you’ll get another lifetime from this saw.
