Hi everyone
Picked up a bargain at a car boot sale yesterday. £2 for a tenon saw. Completely straight, only two broken teeth. After sharpening it cuts like a champ. Taking off the rust didnt take too long either.
Its got no engravings or brand markings that I can see except that somebody wrote “harrison” on the side and its still etched in there even after trying to sand it all out.
Anyway, it had a clunky handle so I had a go at reshaping it like Paul did in that old Artisan saw reshaping video. Went fairly well but the wood was really weird.
It was almost like cutting into plastic or hard dried glue. There is no visible grain on the outside even after sanding, its a solid kind of bright brown colour. I even took a shaving and it came out so smooth it felt like plastic. I almost thought it was plastic but the pieces I cut out are definitely wooden lol, I have attached a picture.
I found an old saw in the shed yesterday with exactly the same type of handle so this type must have been fairly common back in the day. Probably the cheap stuff of the time.
From the picture it looks like some kind of resin, rather than wood.
