I sent an email to Paul’s blog about this but does anybody know what the little buttons/nibs on a hand saw are for? I’ve searched on the internet and got varying results from purely decorative to them being used to clear waste from the kerf when sawing very large timber… It’s just curiosity on my part.
Hi Dave, From my reading, I’ve only found reference to it being a symbol of craftsmanship and a feature without a function. Chris Schwarz gives a couple of ideas for usefulness. http://www.popularwoodworking.com/woodworking-blogs/chris-schwarz-blog/2-great-uses-for-a-saws-nib
I look forward to others comments.
My understanding it was strictly for looks, really serves no purpose. I have heard also carpenters used them for tying a string to, but I believe it was for looks only.
