So I’ve been following the recent winding sticks project videos, and perhaps I missed the explanation, but I am wondering two things:
First, why is dark inlay strip is used along the full length of one stick and only short tabs on the other?
Second, if using short tabs, why not put them at the end of the stick, instead of 1.5 inch in from each end?
Anyone have an idea?
thanks
John
All good questions John. There could be as many different winding stick designs as people making them. The color of the inlay strips just needs to give a good enough contrast when sighting down your piece of wood. The location of the short inlay strips being 1.5″ from the ends is probably just a matter of choice and may look better there. I would think you would want them separated as far as possible to get maximum perceived twist in a board.
Mine are very simple: two strips of maple, one of which has a black Sharpie marker line across the top. Depending on what is in the background when I’m using them, the stick the I have in front could be the one with the black line or the one without. Whatever gives the best contrast.
Experiment with a few things and see for yourself what you like.
