Wooden holdfasts

I made a couple of these, based on videos from competitor you tube channels. They have worked out OK, and do a good job holding this log while I cross cut it with a rip saw. They are made from softwood scraps, so I expect they won’t last long, but they were simple to make, so replacing them over time won’t be a chore.

Couldn’t say, I have never used the branch type. I made these because I liked the idea of home made. I did have to plan the hole placement in my bench though, because the top is not very thick, so I had to put the holes where the bearers were.

One thing I have found is that because I made the holes where the cross members and the bench top met, is that wood movement has misaligned the holes now. But the holdfasts are still working well. Might be time to re-layout the holes and put some extra material in the same orientation on the underside of the benchtop.
