Well, I guess they are too expensive for me at the moment. 250 for the beginner is quite a number. I am also a friend of “if you buy cheap – you buy twice” but obviously turning chisels are a lot more expensive than woodworking chisels.
I enjoy working wood in Germany.
Axminster have a lot of woodturning chisels. http://www.axminster.co.uk/woodturning-gouges-dept828027_pg1/. There still expensive though. Maybe you would be best to buy a chisel at a time. There’s loads second hand on Ebay. This set has some awesome handles http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SET-6-VINTAGE-MARPLES-WOODTURNING-CHISELS-SHEFFIELD-ENGLAND-CARPENTRY-NR-/350711908150?_trksid=p2047675.m2109&_trkparms=aid%3D555001%26algo%3DPW.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D29%26meid%3D5678721662174069447%26pid%3D100010%26prg%3D1013%26rk%3D2%26sd%3D170990764867%26

19 February 2013 at 4:47 pm #8175Florian, My apology, I miss read what you were looking into. I was thinking their chisel set, not wood turning chisels.
No worries, Rodney 😉
Joe, thanks! I just checked the axminster site and they actually have two offers I think about. One is a budget set for £70 and one is from crown for £130.
I don’t know what the shipping is to Germany but over here the best budget set I found was around 150 made in Taiwan. I spoke to the vendor who is a woodworker too and he said that the quality is good but if I can get a crown set for the same price I will probably go for that if the shipping is not too high from axminster to here.

And question to an woodturning-ignorant-person…. that’s me!
To a “home made lathe-man powered”, making a few dowels, and chair legs…
What king of chisels shud i look for?
Are the “Faithfull” woodturning chisels worth the money?Enjoy the learning path...!!

if you are using a spring pole lathe or any other low-speed lathe, you can get along with common carbon steel tools and there is no need for expensive high speed steel that’s hard to sharpen.
If you got a carving gouge like the one Paul uses for spooncarving you can use it and also regular bevel edged chisels.
What you might want to get in addition is a skew chisel.I haven’t got them, but only heard the best of the Ashley Iles carbon steel pole lathe turning tools.
Sorry for not answering your question about the Faithful chisels, I don’t know them.

I bought the cheap set at a local tool store. Set of 8 for 50 bucks. They don’t hold an edge as long but they work just fine for a beginer. I make pens and have had no problems with the cheap set.
