Yes. Those are exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of. When I made my son his bed, I used these http://www.rutlands.co.uk/sp+bed-bolt-178mm+C2165?tyah=y but I think the type in the illustration would be easier to fit.
I made him an attic bed (think of a bunk bed but without the lower bed) as his room is small. He’s been using it for about four years now and is nearly 13. I’ve never yet had to re-tighten the bolts and the bed is still rock solid.
Thanks Nikon. I’ve been thinking about this and decided that I really don’t want to fit more aprons (due to the planing required after) even though it is the better option. I like the idea of bed-bolts. I think even using smaller lag-screws might be an option. I can comfortably make a 7mm hole wihout being too close to the edges, so could use a 6mm lag-screw. Not sure if that would be sufficient though.
