Yes, finally.
It was an interesting journey; lots of learning and many mistakes, but the end result is something that is a joy to work with. Never underestimate the role of a good bench.
The main obstacle was the poor working area and worksurface I used; a smallish apartment bedroom, and a very shaky grey plastic-table. I could have done some the process elsewhere, but I really wanted to show that it is possible even given these constraints. It’s amazing what you can achieve with a few hand-tools, a bit of patience, and some perserverance.
I was going to resurrect the original thread I made, but I didn’t want to be presumptious, plus, many of you have seen it. If your interested, especially if your in the process of building one yourself, head over to page 7 of this section and you’ll find it. It might be helpful to you.
Thanks to all who pitched in along the way!

27 October 2014 at 10:52 pm #120219Well done 😉 a good solid little workbench.
I understand the constraints of working in a small place and it can be very challenging at times. You’re right, it is small Salko; measures just over 40″ length and 14″ deep (benchtop that is). I plan on making boxes, small items of furniture, and maybe get into doing some carving. I could have maybe added an extra length or two to the deepness of the top, but it should be okay. It’s quite heavy for its size so it tends to stay where it is when planing etc.
Cheers Mark; here’s hoping to a bigger working space…one day.
28 October 2014 at 7:27 pm #120277Looks to be a job well done Franco. I like that you modified it to fit your available space. Having a solid workbench is a great thing. Enjoy it.
Very nice, Franco. Congratulations.
It actually looks a lot like the one I made. I think mine is closer to 4 1/2 in length. I built a shelf over the bottom rails, between the legs, and put 2 large landscaping bricks on it. If you have any trouble with the bench moving you may want to try that. With the extra weight it may as well be bolted to the floor… it doesn’t move at all.
Have fun!
Good job Franco, my bench is only 48 inches long and I’ve managed to build some biggish furniture pieces with mine. I’ve had to physically move my bench away from the wall on a couple occasions to clamp things together but overall its been great. You will enjoy working on that new bench.
28 October 2014 at 9:49 pm #120284If you intend on making boxes then it’s a perfect size and well done Frank
Thanks for the nice comments everyone.

You’re not wrong there. Many a frustrating afternoon spent doing that…
my bench is only 48 inches long and I’ve managed to build some biggish furniture pieces with mine
That’s good to know, cheers.Franco… I actually got that idea from other members in some workbench related threads, but it is a great idea for a smaller bench. 🙂
*edit* I found that thread if you want to take a look. https://woodworkingmasterclasses.com/discussions/topic/bench-modifications/page/2/
