Fantastic benches everyone! Once I get this big project at my day job finished, I am off to get one of these suckers built. I have a 10″ Jorgenson quick release vise ready to go along with the lumber.
I saw Paul’s version at the Baltimore, MD woodworking show and couldn’t believe how sturdy and solid this bench was! Can’t wait…
19 January 2013 at 1:30 am #6682Working on a joinery bench. It is the second bench for my shop. I will post pics in a couple of weeks. Iam really excited about it. Also excited about the opportunity to meet Paul in Indy tomorrow.
21 January 2013 at 12:11 am #6729Anyone have any knowledge of a Columbian Vice? I have located one that I can pick up for $45, its a bit rusty and has “3 CD” stamped on the front. It looks like it is about 10″ wide and opens out about 12″.
21 January 2013 at 2:32 am #6730Stephen, Columbian vice is an older American company. I have an old one and its built like a tank. I think someone bought the name and is making a vice under the name. New or old, $45 is a good price even if you have to clean it up some.
That is a nice set up you got there Scott. Love the hand grinder, been looking for something like that also. Do you use the waterstones for honing instead of the strop?
Hey Juryaan-
Using Paul’s method to sharpen, the grinding wheel does not get used much anymore… but would come in handy if my edge geometry is way off or if I have to take off a lot of material.
My grinder has a 3/8″ arbor, so I had to add a bushing to the arbor to get to a 1/2″ diameter that is compatible with the Norton wheel. No big deal, but it would be nice to have a 1/2″ arbor to begin with. Also, make sure to find a grinder that fits a 6″ or larger wheel, and check the arbor for any runout. There are a lot of grinders that only fit a 5″ wheel, which is not big enough for the Norton wheels if that is what you want. The “Railroad” hand crank grinders may be a better choice since they have bigger gears (faster), with a thicker arbor and heavier build.
I tried stropping with leather and paste, but had encountered some rounding over on the edges of my chisel. Not good. I resorted to using my 3000/8000 waterstones, using them like a strop by drawing the edge and back so as not to gouge the stones. I emailed Paul with my concern and he thought my leather may be too thick, or my stropping pressure may have been too firm. I have yet to revisit stropping since my waterstone “strops” seem to be doing the trick.
22 January 2013 at 3:11 am #6772Hey Brent
Thanks for the info on the Columbian Vice. I contacted the guy and told him I was interested, he told me had had 4 he would sell me for $75 total. I went and got them this evening. Two are complete and functional, one has minor damage but functional, the last is beyond repair but good for parts. They all are a bit rusty and need some good cleaning. I’m considering replacing the handle with a longer wooden one, you have any experience with that?
I feel like I got a pretty good deal!
22 January 2013 at 3:36 am #6773You got a good deal. Replacing the handle can be as simple or as elaborate as you desire. Do an internet search for wooden vice handles and look at the images. Im on my iPad and cannot attach a pic right now. Veritas and others have handles for sale if you dont wish to make one. Its very easy to make yourself.

23 January 2013 at 12:18 pm #6802I’m preparing to do my workbench project. I’ve seen your work and opinions and I think a good help for it. It seems that the most common measure for the bench height is 38 “. I measure 1.70 meters (I think they are 66.30”). I think 38 “bench height is a little high for me. Anyone know tell me how to take the correct size for my height?
Thank you all.

Anonymous23 January 2013 at 1:03 pm #6803Xavi, everyone will tell you something different, I’m 1.75 metres (5 feet and 9 inches) and I’m making my bench 35″1/2″ 38″ is far to high for me.
Some people have long legs, short legs, long arms, short arms. Only you will know what hight works for you buddy
Very Best
Ken 😉
23 January 2013 at 1:25 pm #6805Thank you very much Ken. I think if I do my bench a little lower than yours I will have the good measure.
All the best with your project!!
Anonymous23 January 2013 at 3:45 pm #6828Well this week started ok with the bench build. I have all the mortices chopped out, and thought I had all the tenons cut, HaHa on the last top rail I cut the haunch on opposite sides. So now have to start planing an other rail up, as I used rough sawn timber. The practice and Paul’s videos is working though, 5 minutes and I had it planed flat and square.
Getting there guys, coffee brake now though 🙂
