21 April 2014 at 6:06 pm #56330Eddie have you looked at the Men in Sheds sites Although you may be too young
21 April 2014 at 7:34 pm #56335Perhaps we could start middle aged men and there sheds.
I have looked for clubs for woodwork/carpentry/furniture making and have found none or at least in my area very sad affair.
I think there are a few clubs for wood turning , marquetry and carving.
If you want workspace privately would be very expensive I would imagine.
You would need lighting and power also security, insurance, and journey time may be an issues you have to consider as well.
You can get garage lock ups but they do not have power and security normally poor.21 April 2014 at 9:12 pm #56341@daveg no ive not seen their sites but will take a look
@nobby1967 ive looked localy and not able to find anything ive got my shed but its only small 14ft x 9ft and i have to share with the usual, sons bike and all the stuff that looks out of place in the house like 15 or so tins of paint that will never be used again. The minute i go in the shed someone needs a lift somewhere or will you just pop to the local shop, “while your out there will you just cut that grass”. there are schools closing down at a rate of knots not to mention pubs or social clubs i’m sure these spaces could be used as workspaces ,i’m going to contact the local council tomorrow to see if they can point me in the right direction ,21 April 2014 at 9:29 pm #56342I know how you feel Eddy my shed is 19′ x 8′ but I only have half of that.her indoors has the other half full of her stuff. The actual work space I have to work in is about 6′ x 4′. And can be very challenging.
Good luck in finding some space. Keep us posted.21 April 2014 at 9:39 pm #56343@daveg ive just checked out men in sheds that is very much what i’m after but unfortunatly they have a min age of 55 and i can’t wait for 8 years so ive contacted them for info of any other groups if not i am going to look at how they do it see if there is a possiblity of setting something up this side of the water .
22 April 2014 at 12:05 am #56344@edfly Makes you wonder why there are no clubs or groups in woodworking in UK you can join. The ideal places to hold a club would be a school. I’m not even sure schools have woodwork and metalwork class rooms any more.
I would love to occasionally meet like minded people to pass on what I know and to learn from others.Perhaps clubs are too costly to startup and run you have to have the right sort of premisses and set up also have enough members to warrant a club.
You go to woodworking show and there are thousands of woodworkers that turn up. So there are people out their must be in similar situations as us.
I use to be a member of the Institute of Carpenters may be could drop them a line see if they could come up with anything.I must admit I do like working at home with all the comforts that come with it. My other half don’t see that much of me now so taking my hobby out of the home would not go down to well. It could be bliss though if I did move to outside premisses don’t say I said that.
The only way I can gain a little more space is to build another shed to put all of her indoors stuff in. I doubt she would agree to that either.28 April 2014 at 5:52 pm #56531@daveg ive been in touch with men in sheds they are already looking at starting a shed in my local town i am looking forward to the outcome of an up coming meeting with one of the execs thanks for pointing me in the right direction ,have you been to one of their sheds there is one in Wigan .
@nobby1967 i’m sure there are a couple of sheds in your area Dartford has one i’m not sure if thats near you .28 April 2014 at 8:16 pm #56552Eddie I hope it works out for you I thought you were too young? Will be interested to see how you go on

28 April 2014 at 8:52 pm #56556Hi Eddy Dartford 15 miles away and is on other side of Thames and would have to pay a toll across river.
I really would need to find something in South West Essex or East London.
Also I do not know how committed I could be cos of the funny hours I do.
I just think it is a shame that there is so little out there. -
