I saw a unique-looking board of African Mahogany (aka. Sapele??) that I liked at the local big-box store. So I went with it 🙂 . It has lots of contrast across the grain, I think because it’s very flatsawn. Finish is natural Deft Danish Oil, 2 coats. I liked the flat satin finish so I didn’t even bother with wax.

This was the first time I worked with mahogany, and it is such a beautiful wood. I make my things with mostly hand tools, only substituting in power tools for hand tools that I don’t have. The only thing on my clocks done with power tools are the grooves to slide the raised panel in, and the hole for hanging it on the wall. I hope I can find an owner for this who will enjoy it as much as I do. The insert is most likely going to be replaced, but this was the one I had on hand so I used it.

Wallclock by Brian Wilson
Cherry from the orange home store. Finished with orange oil and beeswax. This was my first project with hand tools. For such a simple project it was a lesson in patience in which I still need education. The joints aren’t perfect, the panel is just OK (and my second attempt), but it’s my clock and I made it. I changed the panel size to 5 inches to match the stock width.

Wall clock in poplar with amber shellac. This was my first time making anything out of wood. All things considered, it came fairly decent. The joinery could be better and I had some trouble applying the shellac to the center panel. I think the decorative bits came out very nice though.
