From my experience with wide boards, I’d say first thing is to let the board dry properly. A moisture meter is your friend. If it has cupped or bowed significantly once dry, then it will most likely try to stay this way, even after planing flat. My advice would be to rip it in half then plane the two pieces flat and square. Glue them back as they were. Don’t flip one board. If done properly you won’t be able to tell that they were ever ripped in two. Good luck.
24 August 2017 at 1:29 pm #314663Instead of glue, could you not pinch them together in a vise as Paul did in the recent mortise and tenon video? If you don’t have a vise you could also use clamps to hold the guide to the piece. I often glue temporary clamping blocks onto odd forms with regular pva glue and a piece of newspaper in between. The newspaper let’s glue form a good bond but still pops of easily with a chisel. Hope this helps.
