It seems the shellac is resistent to the window cleaner I use, it seems to make cleanup easy with it just simply wiping off. I did apply furniture wax also.
I’ve been using windex and other similar brands. Trying to find auto glass cleaner here in Australia is about 10 times the price at over $20 a bottle so I stick with household varieties. I think these have no alcohol, maybe auto cleaner does.
28 January 2017 at 2:31 pm #308788In the photo the one at the bottom is coarse. I feel by running my fingers over them and the XXF reflects light and feels like glass.
DMT plates have their courseness etched on one edge which all mine are facing outward so I can check there too.
If you wanted you could make a mark next to the stones. A nice little tapered groove sliced into the edge with a ⅛ chisel might look nice starting with 1 slot for coarse going to 4 grooves for XXF.
28 January 2017 at 1:35 pm #308786For sure, go for it. If I were to only have three stones I’d still give this layout a go using a replaceable strop insert.
In mine I have my stones positioned in 90 degree successions, so I just rotate the board 90 degrees for the next stone.
What I also discovered is my DMT stones aren’t identically sized, so each of my recesses are dedicated to each stone making ir necessary to mark which stone each recess is for.
11 January 2017 at 1:59 am #144119I didn’t know steel could be too old. Did you try to recut yourself using the P.S. method or just from the saw doctor?
I’m thinking the problem I’m having is actually me and the fact that I stand too close because I need to stand that close to actually see.
I actually did some tests by standing further back and not looking as I saw. It turns out that if I do this I cut much straighter, if I stand close it bends in towards my body at the front but not the back, and I believe this would be the action my arm is taking while pushing the saw.
I’ve ordered some magnifying head gear to see if that will help and am awaiting for its arrival and tests to report back on.
9 January 2017 at 5:07 pm #144035And everything’s worth the struggle. Whenever I achieve something I feel rewarded that “I could do it”. We all should feel this way no matter our disabilities.
I’m a programmer, but because of my eyes I learned to program without looking which is advantageous.
9 January 2017 at 5:04 pm #144034Hi there Brett, maybe it’s the name Brett that’s the problem, lol.
I live in Melbourne Australia. I have distance and reading glasses. You know what though I’ve never actually tried using distance glasses in the shop, mainly because I feel that I’m always going to be wanting to do closeup layout and never thought of actually changing them during my work. I’m going to give that a go.
One thing about my eyesight though is that even though I have distance glasses, it’s the shaking of my eyes that makes it hard to focus on detail, especially for long periods of time. If you could imagine your eyes twitching uncontrollably all the time and then when you try study something they get faster it can be a real bummer. They can’t correct my eyes unfortunately, actually they won’t even touch them of fear they will make things worse.
Last night I ordered some cheap headband things you might be talking about with magnifying inserts that I’m hoping will help. I ordered a couple of different kinds so will be sure to share my findings.
30 December 2016 at 4:45 pm #143694Thanks Dean.
Today I used a non sharpenable tenon saw and it did the same thing. I think it must be me and the way I’m sawing, I’m so careful I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, boo.
I don’t have confidence yet, I’m wondering if it’s my vision playing tricks on me. I am blind in my left eye and my right one shakes and I have tunnel vision, means I have no deoth perception. I think I need to practice a lot.
30 December 2016 at 7:27 am #143688Hi guys, thanks for your help.
I tried the saw when I recieved it after just cutting back the rust with steel wool. At that point it was barely cutting, more like brushing over the wood tearing more than penetrating.
There’s actually no set to the teeth yet. I’m avoiding setting at the moment as I need to recut when I’m properly setup to do so. Some teeth have larger gullets than others. I don’t have good eyesight to see but could it be that some of the teeths chisel point is not perpendicular to the blade? As in the file was held skewed to one plate side?
I’ll see if the spine is loose, it’s possible I caused this when attempting to tighten the handle on the plate.
