Hey great job. I like the fact you fit each leg, and saw past the need for uniformity. I did mine from 2by and finished wirh linseed oil and they are rock solid as one would expect.

My brother owns a retail paint store, put together a small box from wood paintsticks for him.just nailed in the bottom and used one handle in the middle which has that small contour and hole. Also made a small one with solid oak bottom about 4″x4″. Left them Unfinished, so he can do what he wants for stain, or clear finishes. The stir sticks are…[Read more]

Walnut and cherry have their own grain patterns and stuctures and you will find them different again when working them as compared to oaks. Some hardwoods will feel ‘soft’ compared to oak or ash. You just learn to enjoy their different characteristics.

Yes common enough problem, often due to from your plane sharpness, or lack of, but coud be the strop technique, which i had issues with for a while until learning to pull straight back like Paul shows. Id watch the plane set up and sharpening video again. Squirrely grain also can present a problem but that is the rare occasion, ,in which case you…[Read more]

BrianJ replied to the topic Flat Sharpening surface options in the forum Tools and Tool Maintenance/Restoration 2 years, 1 month ago
The issue i think you will find is that the stones need to be flat but solid as well, as you dont want it to yeild under the blade, and the second size at 2×6 is going leave you wishing for more room to work the blade. keep with glass or a flat tile and sandpaper for now would be my suggestion.

See link for some starter info on the gap issue, and as far as the two struts if that is the way the vice is built then i dont think you have a choice. Make the cutouts no wider than neccessary and you are on to getting closer to making.

BrianJ replied to the topic Couple of plane setup/restoration questions in the forum Tools and Tool Maintenance/Restoration 2 years, 1 month ago
1. may or may not be an issue. It should turn freely as that is what it is meant to do – travel along the threads to achieve the chosen depth setting and remain adjustable. Once the plane is set to depth i can easily adjust back or forwards to change the setting to suit the cut I need.
2. My #4 always leans to one side in order to get blade…[Read more]

Anything with a scent will tranfer. I might be tempted to consider making a wood box to be used as a cover for you container. tupperware or whatever plastic you are using would protect the flavour of the coffee.

There are some references that indicate sealing all surfaces to prevents uneven moisture exchange thereby allowing wood movement to change at a slower rate. just seems good practice.

Almost complete, updated pics of top of leg, frame assembled. Have long aprons to plane and sand, and shape ends of protruding tenons.
