Hi Greg
Your drawing had me completely bamboozled when I made my stool. Fortunately, I was able to succeed by carefully following all of Paul Sellers’ measurements.
I found this thread in the forums and got some basic understanding of your approach, and I have read By Hand and Eye now. All this means that I have gone down a rabbit hole of proportional design, and having some fun with geometry.
However, I have one burning question: why do you divide the height of the stool by five? I have seen in the classic orders part of By Hand and Eye that dividing the overall height by five is significant, but why? Why five? And why is it D?
The “D” in the Doric order in By Hand and Eye is one eighth of the height of the column, which does not seem to directly relate to the overall height. I am confused.

30 September 2020 at 2:43 am #680101Hi Colin, I did try using the 1/8 (actually3mm) chisel as my guide in one prototype and it was not all that successful. On reflection, I should persist and try again.

29 September 2020 at 4:23 am #680025I like the tape idea and will give that a go. I recently bought a “head lamp” for cutting dovetails when the daylight is poor or at night. It’s a little lamp on an elasticised head band. I bought a 400 lumen model and it works quite well. Lots of brands at all sorts of prices – $30 to almost $300 (Australian). Mine was about $40. I’d want the $300 model to pour me a beer as well as light the work…..
15 May 2020 at 7:00 am #661427Thanks to Larry and Sanford for your replies.
Larry, I did not change the set of the saw when I sharpened it. The factory set seemed okay to me. I was thinking of Paul’s video about improving the performance of a new saw and thought I’d give it a go.
Sanford, it seems to catch about halfway along the blade and then again, at three quarters. Perhaps one tooth is out of whack in those sections. I do sharpen the saws as per Paul’s videos but my technique may be off . My sawing technique may also be the problem. 🙂
