The extra coarse is 220. Turns out it was my technique that was poor. I wasn’t spending enough time on the nose (in comparison to the rest) though I thought the whole thing had pretty good contact.
Anyway, I watched this video and imitated his movements and now my chisel is nice and shiny.
7 February 2016 at 12:13 am #134580Software Engineer here. I expect this is technically feasible, but there’s opportunity cost. I agree, I’d be nice to be able to watch on my Apple TV directly. But it’s not difficult for me to airplay it and I’d personally rather see time/money spent on content than scratching that particular itch.
That being said, I expect this site is built on a customized CMS. It’s possible that CMS has plugins that would allow easy generation of Apple TV markup (TVML). At that point it’d just be a matter of releasing an app. But that’s a lot of hypotheticals and still a non trivial number of new things to maintain that doesn’t directly create new content.
Would be nice though!
Edit: On further investigation, it looks like the site is WordPress powered and someone has built the plugin I thought might exist. Looks like it’s early in development, but this might not be a ton of work if they chose to go down that road. Unclear if the plugin handles authentication though, which would be required since it’s a subscription service.

5 February 2016 at 9:30 am #134560Really appreciate the help, folks! It looks like I’ve got a few good options now so I’m trying to cut them down. Jaw width seems to matter a lot less than screw length but there’s a dizzying number of jaw sizes available. Are there good reasons to go for a 10″ jaw over a 7″ jaw? It seems like if I’m putting wood pads on it (or using Paul’s put-the-clamp-in-the-vise technique) then the extra width might just be extra cost.
5 February 2016 at 12:06 am #134544Ah, looks like the new Eclipses might be good condition on their own: http://www.woodcraft.com/product/152635/eclipse-10-quick-release-vise.aspx#REVIEWS
@Craig – is that the model you’ve got? You’re pleased with the construction?Edit: Amazon seems to have the same model for 3x the price? http://www.amazon.com/Eclipse-ECEWWQR10-10-Inch-Quick-Release/dp/B007521XKM
But also similarly priced… http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004OCH206/ref=s9_al_bw_g328_i2
Any idea what the difference is? I’ve heard that I should be looking for ductile cast iron rather than grey and the cheaper version above specifies grey cast iron (while the expensive one doesn’t).

5 February 2016 at 12:01 am #134540Hi guys – thanks for the advice. I’m happy to pay for a quality tool, but ebay doesn’t even seem to have expensive Record woodworking vises currently. Are there other brands I should look into beyond Eclipse and Record? I also had no luck searching for Woden vises.
