  • Nicely done. Wonderful present.

  • You can fill the gaps from the outside with a wedge. It should not be very tight, otherwise it may split the wood.

  • I used hinges without stops, and I saw no trouble with them. They were described as hinges for folding table tops.

  • Hi Dave.
I have been working on this type of bench for the last three years and find it very useful. Paul fully described the system himself. Here are the links:

    It comes out great!
Without the door it doesn’t lose its attraction. ( Doors with panes would be a very good idea in my opinion.)

  • Yes, I do agree that the resistance is a bit greater, but on the whole it helps a lot. I have been using this method for more than a year and is not planning to go back. This method gives me the possibility to plane in any direction. Certainly I do plane with the grain most of the time but I am not at all worried when there are difficult knots on…[Read more]

  • Hi Gary!

I think the link below is right for you. Read the thread, there are some pictures and a short description on how to tweak the plane. You will also find a link to the video describing the physics of the issue.

I do like this bookcase and the way you do it. It is not a criticism of any kind, just a consideration; From the pictures I can’t figure out for sure the proportions of the cross on the sides of the bookcase. Maybe this element would look still better if the horizontal beam were the same width as the vertical.
    Good luck.

Great! Even the back of the bookcase looks balanced
I hope everything was going well with glue-up.

  • Nice work, good pictures!

    Orestes,
Your explanation is clear and exact. I will take it into consideration. Thank you!

Oh, how do you make sure the rails are the same distance from the edge of the stiles when you assemble the first two joints? I mean there may be small  gaps in the mortises for the tenons to move a bit.

  • Misha replied to the topic Bookcase in the forum Projects 1 year, 3 months ago

Yes, I was. And thanks for clarifying the matter.

    Steadily towards the completion…
I may assume the pine planks are used for some sort of alignment, but I can’t figure out the reference (starting) point.

    Looks nice!

Yes… And lightness is not the last thing to consider.

    Orestes,
    Thanks for the photo.
Rather thin panels. Did you thickness (I suppose this is not a correct word) them with a hand plane or pass them through a planer?
Excuse my asking so many questions; what thickness the boards were when you glued them?
