Pictures of my first two WWMC projects and my first hand tool projects ever. I think I’ll make one or two more boxes before I move on to the clock.
The second box was intended to have a sliding lid, but I forgot to plow the groove before I glued the sides. By sharing that mistake on the forums, I got the idea to add a flip up lid instead. Now my most commonly used tools and my chisels have a nice home.
Edit: The “hinge” are 2 brass pins inserted through the sides and into the lid.

The website software probably doesn’t understand the orientation flag your camera attached to the picture and removed it, so the browser doesn’t know that the thumbnail needs to be rotated.

Thanks Ken, Joe, Gregg, Eddy, David and Dave.
I need to try some of the other techniques used on boxes – such as beading, panel raising and ploughing a grove. I still don’t have a plough plane, but I think I’ll incorporate those elements into my next box.
I’ll have to be more planned and patient so that I bring all the elements together before slapping on the glue. 🙂 I think Paul’s practice of journaling each project is something I should also add as that would definitely make me more planned and organized as I build.

I am hoping to finally use my Stanley #45 this weekend to cut some groves for a lid. I bought it a couple years ago at a M-WTCA meet here in Orlando ( Maitland ) but have not had a chance to use it.
Your doing a great job and thanks for sharing !

Denise, I built a tool cabinet last year using birch and pine, they blend nicely. Birch is really hard. https://woodworkingmasterclasses.com/discussions/topic/tool-cabinet-progress/
11 December 2013 at 12:59 am #23610Hi. These are pretty boxes. I like your creativity on the use of the hinge. I got stuck with glueing up before plowing the groove as well. It was so exciting to have the box ready for glue, I just got the clamps and glue out! It ended up being a box without a lid. I was trying to think of a way to recover and am happy to see you share this post.
Thank you for posting pictures and including your comments. Thanks!
