The local store where I have bought all the timber for my bench have decided they can’t cut lengths of 4″ x 2″ due to ‘health & safety’ as they are too small (I assume they meant narrow). There’s no way I can get it home without cutting it down – which is what the point of a timber-cutting service was all about I thought?
I’ve contacted some other suppliers who don’t seem too interested in helping out. So…I’ve found a website that will cut and plane to size what I need. Their hardwoods are generally a bit expensive, but the ash seems to be reasonably priced.
This is a long-winded way of asking, “Is ash okay to use?”
1 May 2014 at 12:03 am #56631Can you not just cut the timber in the parking area? I’ve had to do this several times. I carry a saw in my vehicle just for this sort of thing.
Of course ash would make a great bench top.
Hey Franco… most of the places I have found that have a big panel saw don’t seem to want to use them for small jobs, like cutting a couple boards down for you. Home Depot in my area has been pretty good about it, but they won’t do much more than cut something in half so I can fit it in my car. It’s better to be prepared and have a plan, like Greg said… have a saw and know your cut layout so quick cuts won’t mess you up when you get them home to cut them to the right sizes.
ash will not yield like the softer pine/ spruce. But I don’t think it really matters, you will have some substantial weight to your bench. Not sure I understand, they will not cut a 2×4 to length? Like a 10′ in half to two 5 footers? Just leave sawdust in their parking lot like Greg suggested…. Lol
The irony is they were cutting it for me up to now. They sell the lenghts in 2.4 Metres, or 3.6 Metres. All I wanted is it cut in half, or thirds, roughly (and a hello, good morning, a smile, or even a sorry wouldn’t go amiss either).
As you say Jay, the stock isn’t always a pleasure to rifle through.
Anyway, thanks for the replies folks; onwards and upwards.
1 May 2014 at 12:00 pm #56644I have a chair made with ash wood that I made when I got my machine operators licence in Germany. It is a lovely wood to work with and the bench will look fantastic. It is less yielding than pine, but we use Red Beechwood on our workbenches here and that is even harder.
Don’t understand the problem with sawing the wood: in my day job I could cut them for you in about a minute and a half. A pity you can’t jus send the wood over to me…
