Axminster have an offer on the red aluminium cramps 1.120 metre should be £12.95 on offer at £7.94 I picked up 4 today from the Warrington branch
I just need to fit the wooden stiffeners and the plywood jaw covers11 June 2014 at 10:36 pm #58418That is extremly cheap it would cost me over $50 to import strange though what ever I need I end up having to have to buy from overseas. I opted out in making my own wooden ones, the only thing holding me back is unable to decide exactly what to use for making the screw and insert. I’ve looked at the wooden tap and die set from woodcraft and if you don’t use hardwood straight grined timber that has been dried properly and saturate it in boiled linseed oil you will tear it to shred and possibly break the grooves in the tool. So you can see how I’m reserved on this and I don’t ant to resort to using a router either. I just may have to seek out an engineer and have one constructed for me.
12 June 2014 at 5:35 pm #58456Thanks for the heads-up, David. It’s an absolute steal. I’ve been after a few more shorter clamps for a while but with such a good price I picked up 8 to get the free shipping.
George.

15 June 2014 at 9:10 pm #58534I have always known them as cramps ie. Sash cramp, F cramp, G cramp, and Cramp heads
15 June 2014 at 10:51 pm #58537That’s what I was taught doing my City & Guilds for Carpentry and Joinery
30 years ago. I still have some of my text books and it is definitely cramps.
Perhaps it’s a British thing.16 June 2014 at 5:00 am #58557In our woodworking stores it’s written clamps but I guess I can understand how cramps can relate eg. I’ve got cramps in my chest so the word tightening is being referred too so how about stitch due to long distant running how’s stitching got anything to do with it.
The thing is try googling the word and click on images you won’t see a single clamp or cramp.
