I am fortunate to have an option here. Have a 52 1/2 up front. I can’t decide which is better for the tail, Veritas or Record 52 (I will sell the one I don’t use).
Factors:
– Projects are all over the place, from big, mortised picnic tables to small shelves for the kids.
– Two young boys interested in woodworking (Veritas easier for them to use?).
– Still relatively new to woodworking so I can’t say which one suits my “style” better.
– I use a lot of reclaimed wood.Any input is appreciated.
19 April 2015 at 5:26 am #126572I use a Veritas inset vise as a taii vise. I use it all the time and am very happy with it. One of the advantages is that any board that I clamp is fully supported by the bench top.
Either choice would probably work for you, although I’ve always thought the Veritas twin screw vise looked like it could be very useful. I don’t have any experience with it though.
24 April 2015 at 7:46 pm #126715Thank you Peter. I’ll probably use the Veritas, but for some reason every time I try to let go of the 52, it sticks to my fingers! There is a circle of hell for people who collect record vises where they are forced to install them for eternity.

Edward,
If it is an early Record it is one of the best vises ever made for working wood but as a face vise not a tail vise. With the exception of a wagon or a classic tail vise all suffer from not providing support along the entire length of the work piece.
BTW, the last few benches I’ve built do not have a tail vise of any kind. I’ve found I can do any of the tail vise functions better, easier, and quicker with the use of hold fasts, battens, stops, and doe’s foot vs. any kind of tail vise.
I wouldn’t sell the Record whatever you decide to use for a tail vise but….if you do drop me a note.

Edward,
I hope you decide to keep it….It is too good a vise to let go even if you do not have a use for it at this time. I’ve a couple of Paramo (Record clones made to help the War effort) vises that have been following me around for years. They have moved from bench to bench. When I’ve tried other vises it’s not long before they are replaced by one of the Paramo’s.

4 May 2015 at 1:47 am #126964My front vise is a 52 1/2 and it’s indispensable. I’ll keep it forever, and give it to my great grandkids. I just keep looking at the 52 and wondering if I’ll ever need it too…
