Why do these rules have metal attachments on one end? My father in law had several and I don’t know what their purpose is. All the rules are less than 12”.
Thanks,
Craig
A couple might not have been stand-alone tools. There was sometimes another body that allowed the rule to be used as a small calipers.
The body could fall off and get lost, which could be why there are three.
The two on the right are Starrett 604R’s which came with and without the hook and various attachments. Here’s one for measuring drill points.
( the attatchment is upside down to use the caliper mode)
That makes sense. And thank you for the photo! I may look for some spare parts to restore it although I don’t machine much metal.
I appreciate you taking the time to answer the question.
Best,
Craig
Good luck.
Most of the attachments are still available, unfortunately, they come at Starrett prices. You’ll do better on the used market.
Below is a useful one, which I believe fits the 604R. Depth gauge and calipers. My in-law was an engineer, and I inherited a bunch of stuff like this.
Yikes that is pricey. Now that I know what I’m looking at/for I can keep an eye and wait for the right price to come along.
Thanks,
Craig
The first place I’d check is his old tool chest. They could still be there.
Pricey… top end machinist stuff puts woodworking tools to shame.
You must be from the Midwest.
Out here in Oregon the term is ‘spendy’.
When I lived in central Pennsylvania the operant word was ‘dear’.
