I won a nice set of augers on eBay, German made by anker bohrer, they came in a nice wooden case but also in the case was the item pictured.

the numbers on the bar are the same as the size of the drill bits (mm) but the size of the holes in the bar is at the widest point of the serrated shape.

    That is a dowel plate.

Used for making your own dowels from scrap wood. The numbers stamped should correspond to the nominal drill size, presumably in Millimetres.

You cut short lengths of straight grained wood and shape it to a round size just a slight amount bigger than the hole selected, position the selected size in the plate over a a dog-hole in your bench top then tap it through the plate starting from the flat side with the numbers. It will produce a fluted-sided dowel corresponding to that drill size.

It should work as is, but it seems to have been in a shed for some time? If you intend using it, you may consider rubbing the areas surrounding the holes flat on a very flat smooth diamond honing plate so that the entrance angle is sharp. It will make tapping the dowel easier and give a less rough surface.

If you search ‘Dowel Plate’ in you-tube, it will bring up some videos that explain it.

    Thank you

makes sense nearest thing I found was a draw plate for making wire so almost the same principle. It looks like it came with the set of drills, as the box has a space for it.

If that is a combined set of metric drills and a dowel plate, keep it safe, keep it all together – don’t split it up – and use it well! Wooden box, too.

You are very fortunate to have found it.

I have a dowel plate and I have various auger drills – and some fit dowels better than others because of the slight variations in tolerances between manufacturers….. but I’ve never seen a complete, combined set like that. It’s very unusual.
I hope that the drills are in good, usable order.

    good luck with it.

Not only is there all the augers but some gimlet bits and a few odd augers that are different makes. . Not cleaned any of them up yet but two were bent so straightened.
