I’ve not done much actual woodcarving. I like Peter Follansbee’s work and know nothing of Chris Pye. When I decide to learn woodcarving I will be buying access to Mary May’s site. She has been on The Woodwrights Shop shoe several times as well.
18 January 2014 at 5:32 pm #26138I agree with Greg, Mary May has a few free videos that you can watch to see the basics of her approach to carving. Beyond that you can buy some of her videos if you don’t want to join the site. I really like Peter Follansbee as well, and his videos are available through Lie Nielson’s web site. Chris Pye is great too, all three of these have different styles and approaches. Also, Bob Easton, who is a member of this site, has his own blog and does a fair amount of carving, you might want to try to send him a private message. And finally, I believe that Paul will have some instruction on carving in the upcoming months.
18 January 2014 at 8:32 pm #26159Florian, they make some great carving tools in Germany! If you find some decent prices, share the word. I like the Dastra gouges, but they are very expensive here in the states. Maybe you could be our sponsor!
Great idea! If they accept shavings as a currency I might be able to sponsor some of you. Honestly I never heard of dastra but that doesn’t say anything. My carving horizon comprises an axe (wetterling trecking hatchet – I love it), a knife, a hook knife (both Frost/Mora) and a Pfeil 40 mm no 7. The Pfeil is a great gouge. So if somebody is desperately looking for the Hirsch and the whole planet is out of stock thanks to 50.000 people admiring Paul carving the ash spoon on youtube, the Pfeil can’t be a lot worse and – at least over here – it’s cheaper. 40 mill at no 7 is almost too big for soup spoons. I carves very nicely but I have to open up my mouth quite a bit to get the cereals in in the morning 🙂
2 February 2014 at 7:29 pm #27084I too have recently been bitten by the carving bug. This week I joined Chris Pye’s pay site. I have learn so much in such a short time. I am going to have to put in a ton more chisel time, but I know I am heading in better direction than I was.
The interaction on Mr. Pye’s site is quite different from Mr.Sellers. Not better, nor worse just different. At this time there is no forum like this, but Mr. Pye (like Mr.Sellers) seems to answer almost every question ask by members on each video.
You can not download any of the videos, but I don’t download the ones on here either. So that is not a big deal to me.
I hope this helps?
3 February 2014 at 1:58 pm #27148I am not big on green man carvings in general, but love the one he (Chris Pye) calls “Solar Green Man”. I would love to rework that one into a lion’s head with the mane flowing kinda like the leaves.
