Hi..!!
I am a beginner on this but whant profesional Tools….
what are the best chislés out there…??
1 November 2015 at 11:27 am #131922How much money do you have? If money is no object, get a set from Lee Valley. Going down the scale is a set of from a Big Box store like Home Depot.
You can find some quality hand tools at yard sales so keep your eyes open. These will need some love and care to get them back into working shape but they will have good quality steel.
1 November 2015 at 3:38 pm #131923If you’re just starting out, I wouldn’t get the “best” right away. Your sharpening skills need to be there or you’ll just quickly end up with a bunch of expensive and multi-faceted skew chisels. 🙂
If you still want the top shelf, I think Sorby, Ashley Iles, and Lie Nielsen are well regarded. I’ve tried LN’s at their hand tool events and decided I don’t like socket chisels.
I worked with big box store chisels for a long time, and they worked fine. They got the job done, just had to sharpen them more because they didn’t hold an edge for very long. On the plus side, your sharpening will improve quickly with lots of practice you get with them. 🙂
A little more than a year ago I bought a set of Narex chisels from Lee Valley and I don’t think you can go wrong for the price. They are good “professional” chisels and hold an edge well in the year I’ve been using them. Paul used to buy them for his classes in the US, don’t know if he still has them for his UK classes. So you don’t necessary have to shell out $300 for a set of chisels that will serve you well.
1 November 2015 at 8:52 pm #131926I also have the Narex chisels and found them to work really well. I got mine off of the clearance table (they’d been returned) so I ended up with a set of 7 for the price of one of the premium chisels. When I wanted a wider chisel, I went back to Narex. As Derek said, you don’t need to mortgage the house to get a good set of chisels.
