Found an old Taylor Brothers saw. The medallion has Taylor Brothers Sheffield around the outside, and the paschal lamb with the flag (no halo that I can see) over the word Advance. The blade has the emblem, with Taylor Brothers Sheffield underneath, and Cast Steel underneath that. No other marking that I can find on the blade.
None of the markings mention Adelaide.
Have had a look around the internet, but nothing really jumps out in terms of being able to put an age to this saw. Anyone out there able to help?
You might try posting your saw with photos to the Facebook group : saws, using, collecting, cleaning and restoring:
A bunch of knowledgeable folks there.
“British Saws and Saw-Makers from 1660” – Simon Barley – ISBN 978- 1-909300-74-3
It has an alphabetical list of makers, with their marks. You may find more pictorial information in that book, if you don’t already have it.
It’s as complete a reference work on the subject as exists.
good luck
Fifty quid for the book, or an email to the Hawley Museum with a small charitable donation. As I am not a collector, just curious, I think I’ll follow the latter route.
Thanks for the suggestions.
(Every time I try facebook I find out that someone I knew has died, so I have been avoiding it as much as possible.)
