I’m in the process of building a small Dovetail saw and I’m getting far enough along that I’ve started thinking about sharpening it. The blade I got in my kit has teeth cut in it but it’s not sharpened or set yet. The teeth are 16ppi and I’m wondering if I need to set teeth this small for a dovetail saw, and if it does need to be set how to reliably and consistently set such small teeth.

    Thanks,
    Matt Newman

Having assembled the saw and done a test cut I’ve answered part of my own question, yes it does need some set I’m just not sure how

Try Paul’s hammer set method if you don’t have a saw set sized for those little teeth..

Another way to reduce the set is to drape two pieces of typing paper over the teeth and press them in a smooth jaw metal vise. The saw teeth poke through the paper just the right amount and the paper on the smooth plate is relatively incompressible. That tip is from saw maker Mark Harrel ( Badaxe saws).

If I understand, you want to add set not to reduce it.

you can use a punch instead of the filed screw.
look at the tip#4 in the video “10 Quick Woodworking Tips 02”

You want to be able to do both.
It’s pretty easy to put too much set in a saw, especially with any method of setting involving an unrestricted use of a hammer.
Knowing how to add and remove set predictably gives you better control over how your saw performs.

    “I am not sure how”
Did Matthew mean “how to” or “how much”? (inclusive OR)
Larry, with our two answers, he will be able to fine tune his saw.

Thanks for your responses, I hadn’t seen the poor man’s saw set I’ll have to give that a try.

I also reached out to the owner of Blackburn Tools (I used a kit from him for the hardware blade and hardware) and asked his advice and figured I’d share it in case someone else was had the same question. He suggested looking for a saw set (the same ones Paul recommends) and filing down the hammer if needed to fit the teeth.

As an aside, I highly recommend Blackburn tools. Very helpful, he even spent a good amount of time on the phone with me walking me through how to complete a step.
