Commercial dowels usually aren’t round or the right size.
They were probably milled months ago in a different climate and them wood does what it does…move.
Usually by the time you get it it has shrunk differentialy.
Home made dowels are stronger if you rive the stock. Commercial dowels are sawn.
And you can always have a dowel at hand if you have a dowel plate.
