I’m a few weeks away from making my final project for my appenticeship and I’ve submitted my sketch to my employer. He’s agreed to it, but only in the sense that I’m a lost cause as far as he’s concerned so he’s not too bothered what I do.
Any thoughts or suggestions? I’m not likely to get much help from the people I’m working with so I’ll need to ask my questions here. Here’s a few to start with:
Where would you order locks like this in the UK?
What does one of these look like when it isn’t in the wood. I’m guessing theres a few millimetres of brass going into the wood behind the edging. Is that correct? How would I go about fitting one of these?I’m aiming at a 15mm thick stock of wood for the main box, with 10mm panel for the lid. The inside and bottom would be 6mm ply with veneer. The top of the box would be lined inside with 5mm of Acer, likewise the inside of the drawer, so that they conrast with the darker wood on the outside, which would be Walnut, Cherry, or pear, depending on what is available. I’ll oil the outside with Tung oil, and wax the inside.

Andy I hope you get some input on the locks, that i cannot help with. However I do wish you the best with your final project. I know you have mentioned a few times about going against the grain in your classes.(Pun intended)
Please post a finished product when done? Would love to see how it turns out.Brian
Andy…
The place were I usually buy my wood is a small carpenters shop in a town near me (they sell wood in small amounts, do doors, gates, roof repairs… You get the picture). They are the last one in many Kms around. Ikea is just 40 Kms and 60 Kms – Yes 2 stores next lo Lisbon
I started to buy pre mill lumber and now I get full length planks and theirs scraps. More work/practice for me but pay much less money for the same amount of wood.
The last month the owner talked to me telling that he have less and less orders and asked me about my work. I explained I do small projects for me and some “costumers” (read friends) by hand tools (exception to my power drill). The man told me immediately “…no way you can do business these days…”
Then I showed him a photo I had on my mobile phone of a dovetailed box with some details and another of my avatar (the carved letters with a pocket knife)…The Man looked at me and his eyes were very bright and then he shake my hand and called me “artist”
Put Your feet very firm in the ground and “fly” to follow Your dream.

19 March 2015 at 1:04 am #125682Hi Andy, i know is thread is a bit old, but here is my two cents; your dovetails in this thread look just like mine. i have been trying to master dovetails for a few weekends now. my first try with cheap pine from home depot didnt go well, by boards kept splitting because my joints were too tight, then i made them too loose, then i dovetailed my box side going opposite directions, now I’m searching this site for more tips and tricks! I am working on a small tray for my chisels out of Alder and having similar issues but my issues are getting smaller and less each time. I think its just a matter of cutting about 100 of these until you can achieve the beautiful dovetails Paul makes and some other I’ve seen on this site.
Once i get my tray done. i will try and post some pictures. Do you have any recent photos of dovetails you’ve cut since this thread went up?
Hoyt
